Guidelines for Minors

Watauga Habitat for Humanity, in recognition of the inherent dangers present on any construction site, yet mindful of the positive experiences of minor participants and their families on other Habitat jobsites, hereby adopts the following regulations governing the participation of minors on its jobsites.

  1. Before any minor begins work at any Habitat jobsite the Statement of Activities and Indemnification Agreement and the Parental Authorization for Treatment of a Minor Child must be signed.
  1. Any child under 14 must be accompanied and supervised at all times by his or her parent or legal guardian.
  1. Any minor (between the ages of 14 and 18) not accompanied and supervised by a parent or guardian on the site shall bring to the site a fully executed Waiver and Consent Form provided in advance by Watauga Habitat for Humanity.
  1. All minors (between the ages of 14 and 18) not accompanied by their parents shall be accompanied by adult supervisors of the age of at least 25 years old. The ratio of minors to adult supervisors shall be not greater than1:5.
  1. Minors ages 14 and 15 will be prohibited from doing roofing work, from welding, from electrical work, and from performing any 'heavy' building tasks or using power tools of any kind.
  1. Minors ages 16 and 17 will be prohibited from doing roofing work, from welding, and from doing electrical work or using power tools of any kind.
  1. Minors may not handle hazardous substances.
  1. Minors may not drive any Habitat vehicle or operate any heavy machinery.
  1. Minors may not work more than 8 hours in any one day.
  1. Minor children of Habitat-chosen families are welcome on their home site, but shall be accompanied by an adult family member. The Habitat supervisor on site will make an evaluation of what degree of supervision is required and what skills the minor child has. In no event, however, will the child be permitted to undertake any task that his or her parent has explicitly prohibited him or her from undertaking.

 

There shall be appointed on each jobsite a manager of volunteers who shall assume responsibility for enforcing each of the above guidelines. The manager, moreover, shall have the right to add additional guidelines that he or she deems reasonably necessary to ensure safety on the jobsite.
